INSURANCE STUDENT

INSURANCE STUDENT ARE NOT LEFT OUT

Definition of 'Risk Management'

The process of identification, analysis and either acceptance or mitigation of uncertainty in investment decision-making. Essentially, risk management occurs anytime an investor or fund manager analyzes and attempts to quantify the potential for losses in an investment and then takes the appropriate action (or inaction) given their investment objectives and risk tolerance. Inadequate risk management can result in severe consequences for companies as well as individuals. For example, the recession that began in 2008 was largely caused by the loose credit risk management of financial firms.

In a simple View

Simply put, risk management is a two-step process - determining what risks exist in an investment and then handling those risks in a way best-suited to your investment objectives. Risk management occurs everywhere in the financial world. It occurs when an investor buys low-risk government bonds over more risky corporate debt, when a fund manager hedges their currency exposure with currency derivatives and when a bank performs a credit check on an individual before issuing them a personal line of credit.

READ AND UNDERSTAND

HOW TO READ AND UNDERSTAND USING RESEARCH METHOD

Research articles can be complex and may seem daunting, especially to beginners who have no experience reading or writing this type of paper. Learning how to read this type of writing is mostly a matter of experience, but utilizing a few simple tactics can make this process much easier.

1. Start by Understanding How a Journal Article is Structured:

At first glance, a journal article may seem to be a confusing collection of unfamiliar terminology and complicated tables. However, most articles follow a fairly standardized format that conforms to guidelines established by the American Psychological Association (APA). By understanding this structure, you will feel more comfortable working your way through each section.
  • The Abstract: This short, paragraph-long section provides a brief overview of the article. Reading the abstract is a great way to get an idea for what information the article will cover. Reading this section first can help you decide if the article is relevant to your topic or interests.

  • The Introduction: The second section of the article introduces the problem and reviews previous research and literature on the topic. This part of the article will help you better understand the background of the research and the current question that is under investigation.
  • The Method Section: This part of the article details how the research was conducted. Information about the participants, the procedures, the instruments and the variables that were measured are all described in this section.

  • The Results Section: So what were the actual results of the study? This important section details what the researchers found, so pay careful attention to this part of the article. Tables and figures are frequently included in addition to the text.
  • The Discussion Section: What do the results of the study really mean? In this section, the author(s) interpret the results, outline the implications of the study and provide possible descriptions of future research that should be conducted.

  • The References Sections: This section lists all of the articles and other sources cited within the article.

2. Skim through the article:

Once you understand the basic structure of the article, your first step should be to briefly skim through the material. Never start by doing an in-depth reading of an article before you have skimmed over each section. Attempting a thorough read-through before you’ve skimmed the contents is not only difficult; it may be a waste of valuable time. Skimming is a great way to become familiar with the topic and the information included in the paper. In some cases, you may find that the paper is not well-suited to your needs, which can save time and allow you to move on to a research article that is more appropriate.

3. Take Notes on Each Section and Ask Questions:

Your next step should be to carefully read through each section, taking notes as you go. Write down important points, but also make note of any terminology or concepts that you do not understand. Once you’ve read the entire article, go back are start looking up the information that you didn’t understand using another source. This might involve using a dictionary, textbook, online resource or even asking a classmate or your professor.

4. Identify Key Information:

Whether you are looking for information that supports the hypothesis in your own paper or carefully analyzing the article and critiquing the research methods or findings, there are important questions that you should answer as you read the article.
  1. What is the main hypothesis?
  2. Why is this research important?
  3. Did the researchers use appropriate measurements and procedures?
  4. What were the variables in the study?
  5. What was the key finding of the research?
  6. Do the findings justify the author’s conclusions?

5. Note the Sources Cited:

When reading a research article, it’s all too easy to focus on the main sections and overlook the references. However, the reference section can actually be one of the most important parts of the paper, especially if you are looking for further sources for your own paper. Spending some time reviewing this section can indicate important research articles on the topic area in which you are interested.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS

Do your future career plans include moving into management?

If your answer is YES, you want to become a Successful Manager, you're going to need to develop your skills as a manager with traits and skills that will make you a "good" one.

However, do you know what traits and skills make up the "good" manager profile? Everyone is not equipped with the attitude or skills needed. Training is imperative for all of us who aspire to assume a leadership roll in your company.
Author David Shubert goes into great detail about the qualities you'll need to get that dream job in management. Study with the best, listen and learn, spend quality time each day with exceptional leadership to absorb the best practices as a Manager.
Below are just a few of the skills you'll want to develop:
  • Charisma
  • Action mindset
  • Recognizing the contributions of your people
  • Clear understanding of the company's mission
  • Strategic thinking
  • Integrity
  • Fights for his/her people
  • Helps build the positive culture of the organization
  • Makes significant contributions to improving the organization
Obviously, there are many more skills you'll develop and use as a manager in business once you assume the responsibility. Books to read, tapes for listening are everywhere. It's up to you to expand your knowledge by learning the success traits of other Managers.
In my early life as a business owner it was not easy. So much to do, so many hats to wear, decisions, decisions, decisions was a constant voice in my head. As a Manager or business owner you'll face the same challenges.

Never discount the value of ideas from other members of your team. Each employee working under your leadership has their own ideas about how their job should be done quicker, better and with greater efficiency.
During my business career it was SOP [Standard Operating Procedure] to ask every employee on our staff to share 2 ideas every week on how to change, fix, move, adjust or replace something about their job, the management, systems, etc. It was absolutely amazing the value of those weekly benefits to our company.
Yes, set up a reward system, share the monetary benefit for good ideas some of your best employees will give you each week. You'll soon discover the team players, the thinkers who willingly share their expertise at little cost to you or the company.

Remember, your Management position is earned not an entitlement. The more you learn and invest in the position the more job security you'll enjoy. Rather than your salary and benefits being a liability on the balance sheet it will be an asset to value.

The boss, your Supervisor, is interested in your success. She will take notice of the value you bring to the company, your division, your team. Everything, every person, is valued as ROI [return ON investment] that justifies our bottom line worth to the firm. Profits are a necessity for survival in all firms and our future depends on it regardless of position.

FRONT VIEW OF LAGOS STATE POLYTECHNIC

BRIEF HISTORY ON OUR GREAT SCHOOL

Over the years, Lagos State has grown to become Nigeria’s most dynamic state. It is the most populous conurbation in Nigeria with 7,937,932 inhabitants as at the 2006 census. It is currently the second most populous city in Africa and currently estimated to be the second fastest growing city in Africa. Lagos is Nigeria’s most prosperous city, and much of the nation’s wealth and economic activities are concentrated in Lagos State. The commercial, financial and business center of Lagos and of Nigeria remains the business district of Lagos Island, where most of the country’s largest banks and financial institutions are located. Its progress, development and growth emanate from its dynamism as the nation’s commercial\cultural melting pot in tourism, football, education and from the commendable foresight of successive administrations that have governed the state. Lagos State lies to the south-western part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on the West Coast of Africa. It has one of the largest and most extensive road networks in West Africa. The Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway are the major arterial routes in the north of the city and serve as inter-state highways to Oyo and Ogun States respectively.

To the West, the congested Badagry expressway serves outlying towns such as Festac town. It stretches for over 180 kilometers along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It is pertinent to note that despite its sprawling population, constant reconstruction, renovation and incessant traffic jams, Lagos still offers a lot of satisfaction to its visitors and inhabitants. Lagos is a bustling social city with varying traditional festivals such as the Eyo and Egungun festivasl, carnivals and other side attractions such as theatres, cultural centres etc. It has a vibrant administration which is supported by 57 Local Government areas, one of which is the Ikorodu Local Government that hosts the main campus of the Polytechnic.

In 1975, the Lagos State Government decided to approve the establishment of a College of Science and Technology as the first Lagos State-owned tertiary institution. The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), previously known as the Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTECH), was founded in 1977 with the promulgation of the Lagos State Edict No.1 of 1978 which gave the College its legal existence with retroactive effect from June 1977.

In 1986, the Lagos State Government changed the name of the Institution from the Lagos State College of Science and Technology to the Lagos State Polytechnic. Academic activities started at the Isolo Campus of the Polytechnic in January, 1978 with the admission of 287 pioneer students into five different departments, viz: Accountancy and Finance, Insurance, Secretarial Studies, Management and Business Studies. The College was also offering Basic Studies Programme for candidates wishing to prepare for the G.C.E ‘A’ levels in Arts and the Sciences.

On the 1st of August, 1978, the Lagos State Government-owned School of Agriculture at Ikorodu was integrated into the College to become the Ikorodu Campus. The Polytechnic is concluding efforts to move from its hitherto multi-campus nature, to a monocampus institution. Sequel to the movement of the seat of administration to the Ikorodu permanent Campus, the Polytechnic had been operating a multi-campus system with three campuses namely, Ikorodu, Isolo and Surulere, (the last two located within Lagos metropolis).

With effect from May 2000, the Ikorodu Campus took over from the Isolo Campus as the seat of administration of the Polytechnic and the permanent campus of the institution. Since the giant step was taken in the year 2000, the institution has moved most of its schools and departments to the Ikorodu campus, while plans are going on to move the few remaining departments of the School of Management and Business Studies in the nearest future after the completion of accommodation facilities. It is pertinent to note that the Polytechnic will still retain the Isolo Campus as the School of Part Time Studies, in view of its proximity to the major clientele for the programme, who are largely situated in the Lagos metropolis. .
